What's the difference between IGS and PLY?

IGS CAD Exchange is igs extension for iges — initial graphics exchange specification. PLY 3D Mesh is stanford polygon format for 3d scanned mesh data. Key difference: IGS CAD Exchange excels at same as IGES with shortened file extension, while PLY 3D Mesh offers simple mesh format with per-vertex color data.

How does the IGS to PLY conversion work technically?

What happens to my files after conversion?
