Why iPhones use HEIC
Since iOS 11 the iPhone camera saves photos as HEIC under Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency. HEIC uses HEVC compression, so photos take roughly half the space of JPG — but Windows needs an extra extension to open them and many websites and forms reject them. Choosing “Most Compatible” in the same setting makes new photos JPG.
What is and is not kept
The picture is decoded with libheif (via the heic-to library) and re-encoded in your browser. The output is standard 8-bit colour. EXIF metadata — camera, date taken and GPS location — is not written to the new file, which is handy before posting photos publicly. For a Live Photo you get the still image.
How it works
Uses Canvas2D and WebGL2 with OffscreenCanvas for parallel processing. Filters run as GPU shaders where supported, falling back to CPU SIMD via WebAssembly. The processing code runs inside the page, so your file is not uploaded to a server — you can confirm this in your browser's DevTools → Network tab.
